VISIT BY CLERGY OF THE COPTIC CHURCH TO THE PATRIARCHATE OF ALEXANDRIA
On 3rd January 2019, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa welcomed to the See of the Patriarchate a group of seventy-five clergy from the Coptic Church of Alexandria, headed by the Representative of the Coptic Patriarch in Alexandria, Bishop Pavlos, who were paying their very first visit to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate.
His Beatitude the Patriarch welcomed them in the Throne Room, where he addressed Bishop Pavlos, wishing the Patriarch of the Coptic Church, Tawadros II, a blessed New Year.
During his speech he addressed to the visitors warm wishes for the upcoming (according to the old calendar) Feast of the Nativity, expressing his sadness for the innocent Christian victims of the Coptic Church who lost their lives due to extremism.
He also thanked the Egyptian President Mr. Al Sisi because he is working hard to combat this phenomenon.
They were then taken on a tour of the Patriarchate, the Patriarchal Library and the Archaeological Museum by the Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria His Eminence Metropolitan Narcissus of Accra, and a lunch was then hosted.

« Saint Iakovos » en Tanzanie (Dimitrios Métropolite d'Irinoupolis)
Avec la grâce de Dieu, les vœux et les bénédictions de Sa Béatitude Théodore II, Pape et Patriarche d’Alexandrie et de toute l’Afrique, le Révérendissime M. Dimitriou a achevé la construction d’une autre école Orthodoxe celle de « Saint Iakovos » à la ville de Kisaki, à l’est de la Tanzanie, un don d’un ami anonyme de la Mission Orthodoxe du Nord de la Grèce.
Malgré le fait que Dieu a béni ces 14 années de l’œuvre missionnaire du Révérendissime à l’est et au centre de la Tanzanie, de sorte que jusqu’à présent sept autres écoles soit elles ont été construites soit elles ont été rénovées de fond en comble par lui, les besoins sont encore plus grands vu les fruits riches en bénédiction des efforts missionnaires.
Depuis très tôt le matin, le lundi 11 septembre, des centaines d’élèves sont arrivés à l’école nouvellement construite surtout issus de la tribu primitive des Massaï, des prêtres indigènes de la région, des fidèles Orthodoxes, des enseignants, mais aussi des maires, des présidents de communautés, des directeurs d’écoles et d’autres officiels des collectivités locales, pour assister à la cérémonie de la Bénédiction de la première école Orthodoxe dans la préfecture de Morogoro, c’est à dire à un nouvel effort missionnaire fructif à l’est de la Tanzanie où la majorité des habitants sont musulmans!
Le Révérendissime après la fin de la cérémonie de la Bénédiction en parlant en swahili, il a prôné les efforts du Patriarcat d’Alexandrie à chaque coin du continent africain pour la paix, l’éducation, la santé, la prospérité et la cohabitation harmonieuse et il a souhaité à des enseignants, des élèves, et des parents une bonne année scolaire bénie et fructueuse pour le bien et le progrès de la Tanzanie, mais aussi en général du continent africain.
Ensuite, en hommage de gratitude, le roi local de la tribu de Massaï a honoré avec l’honneur royal le Révérendissime M. Dimitriou qui – il faut noter – est le seul chef religieux blanc dans la région de Morongoro qui reçoive cet honneur !
Finalement, nous voulons remercier une fois de plus tant le Conseil d’administration que les donateurs de la Fraternité Missionnaire Orthodoxe pour le soutien continue à notre œuvre missionnaire ici à l’est de la Tanzanie et vous informer que le terrain a été déjà acheté pour que nous construisions la 36e église en Tanzanie, celle de l’Annonciation que votre Fraternité s’est empressée de financer et je vous remercie de nouveau pour votre prière durable et votre soutien continue!

ORTHODOX BAPTISMS IN BRAZZAVILLE
In the afternoon of 5th January 2019, His Eminence Panteleimon. Metropolitan of Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon went by air to the capital, Brazzaville, where he performed the baptisms of newly-enlightened brothers and sisters in the outdoor baptistry of the Parish Community of the Resurrection of the Lord, to whom he addressed paternal advice and prayers.

Το μεγάλο αυτό σε έκταση έργο συντηρείται από το "δίλεπτο της χήρας"και προέρχεται τις περισσότερες φορές από το υστέρημα των ανθρώπων και όχι από το περίσσευμα. Για τον λόγο αυτό είναι μεγάλη η αξία αυτής της προσφοράς. Η οικονομική ενίσχυση είναι αναγκαία. Υπάρχουν έργα που δεν μπορούν να ευοδωθούν χωρίς αυτή. Τέτοια είναι:
Αγορά οικοπέδων για ναούς, σχολεία, ορφανοτροφείο κ.ά.
Οι μισθοί των γιατρών, των δασκάλων, των φυλάκων των κτιρίων, των μαγειρισσών κ.ά.
Η συντήρηση των ναών, σχολείων και κτιρίων.
Η πληρωμή ενοικίων σε απόρους.
Η κατασκευή σπιτιών σε απόρους.
Η κατασκευή και ο εξοπλισμός Ιερών Ναών, Πνευματικών Κέντρων, Σχολείων και Ιατρείων.
Η αγορά φαρμάκων και η παροχή νοσηλίων.
Η αγορά γάλακτος και μπισκότων για το πρωινό παιδιών σε σχολεία και ιδρύματα.
Η διανομή τροφίμων.
Οι εξορμήσεις σε απομακρυσμένα χωριά για διανομή ειδών πρώτης ανάγκης.
Η κατασκευή δεξαμενών για αποθήκευση νερού.

ΤHE SUBMERSION OF THE HOLY CROSS IN THE CONGO RIVER
On Sunday 6th January 2019, His Eminence Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon served the Divine Liturgy, preached the homily and conducted the Service of the Great Sanctification at the Holy Parish Church of the Resurrection of the Lord in the capital, Brazzaville, following which a procession took place by special permission ending on the banks of the Congo River.
The Orthodox Christians experienced therefor the 6th time in the history of the Orthodox community, the ceremony of the submersion of the Holy Cross in the waters of the second largest river in the world.
On the banks His Eminence spoke briefly about the submersion of the Holy Cross and the sanctification of the waters. In conclusion he conveyed to the Christian flock the paternal wishes and blessings of His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandrian and All Africa, thanked the state authorities for the respect shown to and the support of the local Orthodox Church of Congo-Brazzaville, as well as the state television Tele-Congo for the television coverage of the Eucharistic Gathering and the ceremony of the submersion of the Holy Cross.
On the return to the Holy Church he gave an Epigonation to the Parish Priest, The Reverend Iconomos Fr. Sergius Mabelemo, presented to the congregation the candidate for upcoming ordination Mr. Iakovos Ntsoumou Miayokela and received the thanks of the Chairman of the Parish Council Mr. Adrien Hossie for the paternal concern and love shown. His Eminence then departed immediately by air for the See of the Holy Metropolis in Pointe-Noire.

Της κοπής θα προηγηθούν επίκαιροι ύμνοι από την Χορωδία του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου υπό τη διεύθυνση του κυρίου Γιάννη Βρυζάκη.
Η ανωτέρω χορωδία θα αποδώσει Ελληνικά τραγούδια.
Η εκδήλωση θα κλείσει με την καθιερωμένη κοπή της Αγιοβασιλόπιτας από τον εκπρόσωπο του Μακαριωτάτου Πάπα και Πατριάρχου Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής κ.κ. Θεοδώρου Β’, Μητροπολίτη Γουινέας κ. Γεώργιο.

Biography of Bishop Athanasius of Kisumu and Western Kenya
His Grace Bishop Athanasius Akunda was born Amos Masada Akunda in Western Kenya in 1971. He was the eldest of six children, whose father, Joseph, is a theologian who studied at St. Tikhon’s Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. Amos became Orthodox at the age of eight after his parents converted to Orthodox Christianity. Following secondary school, he completed the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary in Nairobi, then was sponsored by OCMC to study for a Master of Divinity degree at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. He completed studies and later obtained a Doctor of Theology degree from UNISA State University of South Africa. He also completed a Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Education Management at the India Institute of Management, and a Certificate in teaching English as a foreign language at the Cambridge Institute of English Language in Boston.
As a layman, he taught African Literature, Christian Religious Education, Social Education, and Ethics at Ebukhaya High School, Ebusiloli High School, and Ngoro Orthodox High School in Kenya. He served as a catechist in western Kenya and secretary in the office of the Archbishopric of Kenya. He was ordained a deacon on April 12, 1998, by His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim (currently of Zimbabwe), and presbyter on July 25, 2002 by the same hierarch while he was Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria. He was consecrated as an archimandrite on January 18, 2010, by His Eminence Archbishop Damaskinos of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
In South Africa, he served as a missionary priest assisted by OCMC and helped create the first interracial Orthodox churches in the country. He served as the parish priest at St. Seraphim in Soshanguve, at Sts. Raphael, Irene, and Nicholas in Yeoville, Johannesburg, while simultaneously serving as Dean and Lecturer at Petros VII Seminary. He then served as the parish priest at St. Nicholas of Japan Church from 2009 to 2015. During these years he represented the Patriarchate of Alexandria at the World Council of Churches and the All African Conference of Churches.
In May 2015, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, asked Fr. Athanasius to leave South Africa, after serving there as a missionary for 13 years, and return to his native country of Kenya in order to serve at the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary in Nairobi. He was appointed as the Director of Missions and Lecturer in Cultural Anthropology, Patrology, and Teleturgics. On November 24, 2015, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria as Bishop of the newly-established Diocese of Kisumu and Western Kenya. He was ordained by His Beatitude on December 6, 2015, and has spent the past three years developing his new diocese.
His Grace Athanasius passed away on January 4, 2019, at 48 years old.

Biography of Bishop Athanasius of Kisumu and Western Kenya
His Grace Bishop Athanasius Akunda was born Amos Masada Akunda in Western Kenya in 1971. He was the eldest of six children, whose father, Joseph, is a theologian who studied at St. Tikhon’s Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. Amos became Orthodox at the age of eight after his parents converted to Orthodox Christianity. Following secondary school, he completed the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary in Nairobi, then was sponsored by OCMC to study for a Master of Divinity degree at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. He completed studies and later obtained a Doctor of Theology degree from UNISA State University of South Africa. He also completed a Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Education Management at the India Institute of Management, and a Certificate in teaching English as a foreign language at the Cambridge Institute of English Language in Boston.
As a layman, he taught African Literature, Christian Religious Education, Social Education, and Ethics at Ebukhaya High School, Ebusiloli High School, and Ngoro Orthodox High School in Kenya. He served as a catechist in western Kenya and secretary in the office of the Archbishopric of Kenya. He was ordained a deacon on April 12, 1998, by His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim (currently of Zimbabwe), and presbyter on July 25, 2002 by the same hierarch while he was Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria. He was consecrated as an archimandrite on January 18, 2010, by His Eminence Archbishop Damaskinos of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
In South Africa, he served as a missionary priest assisted by OCMC and helped create the first interracial Orthodox churches in the country. He served as the parish priest at St. Seraphim in Soshanguve, at Sts. Raphael, Irene, and Nicholas in Yeoville, Johannesburg, while simultaneously serving as Dean and Lecturer at Petros VII Seminary. He then served as the parish priest at St. Nicholas of Japan Church from 2009 to 2015. The Greek Orthodox Community of Blantyre in Malawi celebrated the Holy Epiphany. Following the blessing service at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nektarios the Great Blessing of the Waters was conducted by pontifical commissioner father Ermolaos .
Thank you to all of you who attended the ceremony of Theophania and especially the children who dived and retrieved the Holy Cross from the water.
