OCMC News - St. Vladimir Seminarians hold ‘Taste of Africa’ to Raise Funds for Orthodox Missions

St. Vladimir's seminary students from Africa held a fundraising dinner at the school
featuring African cuisine to raise support for their participation on an upcoming mission
team back to their home continent.

OCMC News - St. Vladimir Seminarians hold ‘Taste of Africa’ to Raise Funds for Orthodox Missions

by Orthodox Christian Mission Center (Posted 3/15/2018)
The following is adapted from an article by Subdn. Alexander (Pradeep) Hatcher published by St. Vladimir's Seminary.
Three St. Vladimir seminary students held a special African fare-themed luncheon to raise money for an OCMC short-term mission trip to Uganda this summer.

The seminarians, two hailing from Nigeria and one from Uganda, prepared African cuisine with Great Lent in mind. Third-year seminarian Dn. Simon Menya received a lot of compliments on the food, especially about the flavor in the beans!

Dn. Simon will be returning to his home country this summer on the OCMC team. He will be accompanied by eight other students from St. Vladimir's Seminary.

This special Lenten meal celebrated the seminarian’s African heritage and highlighted the need for the Church’s outreach in countries like Uganda, where Orthodoxy has seen significant growth in recent years.

Dn. Simon reflected how important the Church’s witness is in a place like Uganda that is still trying to heal after twenty-four years of civil war, “These wounds need spiritual words and words of comfort, love, and care to heal, and already priests and parishioners [in Uganda] are so happy and are waiting to learn more about God from their brothers and sisters from another part of the world.”

Members of the Uganda mission team plan to teach on topics including prayer, the sacraments, evangelism, and the work of the Holy Spirit in six different locations around the country. It is hoped that the OCMC Uganda outreach team will offer participants a life-changing learning experience.

As part of the Conference of the World Council of Churches, taking place in Arusha of Tanzania, from 8 to 13 March, on the subject of:
Moving in the Spirit: Called to Transforming Discipleship, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)

On Sunday 11th March in the Holy Community and Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in the Diocese of Arusha, a multi-hierarchal Inter-Orthodox Divine Liturgy was celebrated.
The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Elpidoforos Metropolitan of Proussa, head of the representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, His Eminence Makarios Elder Metropolitan of Nairobi, His Eminence Seraphim Metropolitan of Zimbabwe and Angola, Their Grace the Bishops Joseph of Patara (Argentina), Agathonikos of Arusha and Central Tanzania, who is also the local Bishop in the area. Many Clergy from Local Orthodox Churches participated and the Divine Liturgy was attended by a number of delegates.
At the end of Orthros, the Service of the Veneration of the Cross took place in total order, and the students of the Theological Seminary in Nairobi sang the hymns. Before the Dismissal of the Divine Liturgy and in front of the packed Holy Church, His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Makarios of Nairobi read the Greeting of His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. Among other things in his address, the Alexandrian Primate mentioned the importance of the convening of the above Conference in Arusha which is the undeniable capital of East Africa, but on the African Continent generally, which as it belongs to the spiritual jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Alexandria is a continual challenge to the ministry to our African brothers and sisters who are made in God’s image, and the solution to the economic, political and social problems which are continually increasing, with particular emphasis on the care of refugees and our brothers and sisters who are in need.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, gifts were given to the hosting local Bishop Agathonikos (by His Eminence Elpidoforos, the representative of Patriarchate Daniel of Romania the Very Reverend Michai Himcinschi and Reverend Gregory Pelusi representing His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Albania, who for many years served in the area as Patriarchal Vicar of East Africa.
After the Worship Gathering a great meal was hosted for the participants in the Refectory of the adjacent Greek School of “St Constantine” on behalf of the Hellenic Community of Tanzania.

On 24th March 2018, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, officiated at the Service of Great Vespers at the Community Parish of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Alexandria.
On the next day, 25th March, His Beatitude officiated during Orthros and served the Divine Liturgy, concelebrating with His Eminence Narcissus Metropolitan of Accra and Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and Clergy from the Patriarchate.
Present at the worship Gathering were the Consul General of Greece in Alexandria Mr. Emmanuel Kakavelakis, the Chairman of the Cypriot Brotherhood of Alexandria Mr. Haralambos Haralambides, the 2nd Deputy Chair of the Hellenic Community of Alexandria Mrs. Mary Pavlidou, the Financial Supervisor of the Community Mr. Paris Pefanis Makris and the Community Councilors Nicholas Kopelos and Andreas Vafiades, the Chairlady of the Association of Greek Academics “Ptolemy I” Mrs. Lilika Thlivitou, teachers and pupils from the Greek Schools of the Great City, Scouts, faithful Christians from the Greek and Arabic Speaking Community and other dignitaries.
In his homily His Beatitude in warm words spoke of the meaning of the dual feast of the Annunciation and the National Regeneration, the Most Holy Virgin, the All-praised Mother, who once again filled the Church of the Annunciation in Alexandria with those few Alexandrian Egyptians, and prayed that she would intercede that the seas which bridge the nations will be seas of peace and friendship among people. “Today the Annunciation has shone again, a church which will live in Alexandria to the ages of ages”, the Alexandrian Primate concluded.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, a Memorial Service was sung, and wreaths were laid at the two memorials which have been constructed outside the church.
“Greece was loved by few and envied by many…But, despite all this, Greece will live on to the ages of ages. No threat scares her. Long live Greece”, concluded His Beatitude, singing together with everyone the Greek National Anthem, which was followed by the Egyptian National Anthem, showing everyone the mutual fraternal journey of Greece, Egypt and Cyprus.

The parishioners at Annunciation Orthodox Church on Bukasa Island, in Uganda are blessed to have Father Christopher Walusimbi and Matushka to care, nurture and teach the Orthodox Faith to them. They are deeply grateful, yet due to widespread poverty are unable to provide any kind of income to them. During our Executive Director’s visit to Bukasa Island in June 2017 he wrote, “In this unforgiving land where there are no modern conveniences, for the last 32 years Orthodox faithful have built a church, one rock at a time. Even at times carrying those rocks on their – several kilometers – one rock at a time. This church has truly been built on the Rock of Christ as evidenced by the slow, painful obedience and faith that these Orthodox people and priest have shown as together they raise a great Light to dispel the dark cloud of animistic paganism.”
A boating transportation business supported the parish and family for quite a while. It is a highly competitive business. When Father Christopher’s boat was down without an engine and needed repairs, most of their customers went to other transportation providers. It is a long and slow process to bring the business back to a point of providing support.
Matushka has a little shop where she sells sundry items such as her homemade cookies and some personal items. She and Father Christopher now have 300 chickens which provide 8 trays of eggs (2 dozen each tray), which she sells in the shop.
Father Christopher’s dream is to see the parish building of Annunciation Orthodox Church be finished in his lifetime. Many things need to happen before that dream can take on any bit of reality. Bringing in mission workers with carpentry and stone mason skills, strong backs and hands and a willingness to travel far from home to the center of another continent is the first step to completing the dream.
That first step cannot happen until Father Christopher’s tractor is repaired. When building supplies are brought to Bukasa Island, the tractor is used to haul the supplies from the dock to the church property. It is used to haul around stones. The tractor has been inoperable for about a year.
What Father Silouan said then is worth repeating now, “Let’s join these faithful people, letting them know they are not alone in their prayer and ministry on Bukasa Island, Lake Victoria, Uganda. Join me and put your hands on the lighthouse that shines a spiritual light to many generations of people who have been born under the demonic cloud of pagan darkness.”
Through your generosity, would you help get this tractor running? Please donate to Orthodox Africa and mark your donation “Annunciation Orthodox Church.” May your generosity be blessed!
