We had the blessing of His Grace Innocentios who celebrated in Rwamagana parish the Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the commemoration of Saint Basil the Great, this 1st January 2016. His Grace Innocentios has celebrated the Divine Liturgy as a Priest and not as a Bishop, because he has only 3 priests in Rwanda where more than 1000 people have been baptized and many catechumens are waiting the sacraments. « Therefore said He unto them, The harvest trul...y is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest»Luke 10:2. The Apolytikion and Kontakion of that day have helped us to enter the mystery of these two feasts.
Apolytikia t.1
Kontakion t.3 Today the Virgin
The Lord of all things undergoes circumcision, and in his love cuts off the failings of mortals; today he gives salvation to the world. While in the highest there rejoices the Hierarch of the Creator and bearer of light, Basil, the god-like initiate of Christ.
After the Divine Liturgy the Bishop said the Prayer of Doxology of the New Year.
Every Christian in Rwanda wishes the Happy New Year to the Bishop Innocentios and to all Orthodox Christians in Rwanda, Burundi and East Congo.
May God grant him many years.
From the Diocesan Coordination.

ENCYCLICAL LETTER OF THE NAVITY OF CHRIST BY HIS BEATITUDE THE POPE AND PATRIARCH OF ALEXANDRIA AND ALL AFRICA

Ref. No: 145/2016

THEODOROS II
BY THE GRACE OF GOD POPE AND PATRIARCH OF ALEXANDRIA, THE ENTIRE LAND OF EGYPT AND ALL AFRICA
TO THE PLENITUDE OF THE APOSTOLIC AND PATRIARCHAL THRONE OF ALEXANDRIA
GRACE AND MERCY AND PEACE FROM OUR LORD AND GOD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST BORN IN BETHLEHEM
My dear brothers and sisters,
Our path to salvation has always been either a path of convergence to the will of our Creator or a path of deviation from it due to the predomination of our own will. Our vacillation between the divine and our own will, has sealed and will continue to seal – often tragically – our path to our natural destination, which is none other than to become partakers of God by Grace.
Being in the paradise of communion with our Creator, we have forgotten the benevolence of Creation and raised the banner of rebellion, in breach of the contract we made with God. Yet God, with paternal affection and love, has not abandoned us in the tragedy of our fall. Condescending to our weakness, He revealed His will and, through Moses, offered us indicators or a just and fraternal living.
And when the fullness of time had come, God gave us a gift greater even than the gift of Creation. He gave us the gift of Adoption. He sent His Only Begotten Son to lighten our path of return to the embrace of the Father. This time God’s contract with the people was summarized in one single commandment: love one another. Sincere love was proclaimed as an attitude and way of life. A way of life measured by our readiness to recognize in the face of others, not simply our fellow human beings, but our brothers and sisters.
Yet today we forget God’s will. We want to decide whether to accept or reject the gift of a new life. We want to regulate the end of our earthly life. We want to give new meaning to the God-given institution of family. We want to govern creation not as rational stewards, but as nothing but ruthless exploiters. We want either to suppress faith in God, or to transform it into a means of enforcing misanthropic ideologies.
And, since we have marginalised God and have removed conventional borders through technology, fear has come to erect new walls. We feel fear, because there are people around us who are determined to trample on the lives of others, in order to impose their own will misanthropically. We feel like the Alexandrian poet who desperately confesses: “Without reflection, without mercy, without shame, they built strong walls and high, and compassed me about”.
The world that was deeply wounded by the absurdity of the two world wars, now face a threat which is not at all conventional, but rather excessively disproportionate. The image of God in us has become so tarnished, as we have succumbed to our own will, making the prospect of likeness to God to seem hopelessly distant.
Yet, Christ, who is born tonight, said to us: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”. Christ who loves mankind pledged to remain beside us. What do we owe Christ in return? What we owe Him is our conscience’s peaceful revolution with the banner of love’s commandment, the mandate we signed with God. This peaceful revolution is required to reverse the pendulum of history from our own will to the will of God.
Do we have the extenuating circumstance of ignorance or of misunderstanding the divine will? No! Because the truth was expressed in the Gospels and it was summarized in one single word: mercy. Our Lord told us to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, host those in need, soothe the pain of the sick, visit those in prison. In other words, share, love, partake of the pain of others. Show concern for the rights of others, and do not tolerate the hypocrisy of the many.
My dear brothers and sisters,
The Elder Joseph the Hesychast, said: “God does not want to save us on His own will… He always helps, He is always beside us, but He also wants us to work, to do what we can”. God respects our freedom, but always looks forward us to stretching out our hand. He looks for us to cooperate, to do whatever we can, so that we can achieve what our Lord, who is born today, promised us: the return to full communion with God.
Many years!

OCMC News - Stories from Kenya
Sandy with some of the children from the Makarios
Children's Home in Nyeri.

The following is an excerpt from a reflection written by past OCMC Mission Team member Sandy Sipp. Sandy and her daughter, Ella (12 years old), went on the OCMC team to the Makarios Children's Home in Nyeri, Kenya, earlier this year (2016). Sandy reflects on a couple of stories about the people she encountered during her time at the children's home:
There is a devout man from the Congo who came to Orthodoxy on his own from reading and studying books on church history, who is in charge of the Children’s Home. He is a mighty advocate for the kids and will often spend his free time trying to find the extended family of the kids who live at the home currently or searching the streets for children who need a home now. He told us many tales about the children residing at the home that were troubling. From a young girl who bears the scars of her stepfather’s attempt to burn her alive simply because he didn’t want her anymore, to another child whose body stopped growing thanks to HIV, it’s obvious that he cares deeply and hurts alongside the kids who need his influence (they call him “Dad”). He is desperately trying to think of ways to make the school self-sustaining and gave us each a bracelet made by the kids that he hopes to maybe one day sell in America.
Ella, my daughter, befriended many, but bonded with two girls with troubling stories during the week. There was a beautiful and intelligent girl with severe scoliosis, and another young girl who was left forever changed thanks to untreated malaria, who would hold Ella’s hands to and from our different classes and breaks. One of these girls wrote Ella an eloquent letter thanking her for her friendship and love and gave her a plaque reused from her middle school graduation. Both girls were unwanted due to their ailments but are strong and love God. The relationship Ella formed with these two girls was precious and left Ella sad to leave them.
My most treasured relationship was made with a little guy who, during most of the week, made it known that he did not want to be present, and absolutely would not participate in the crafts or lessons we were giving. I spoke with a staff member who said that the little boy was recently pulled from the streets and wasn’t happy about losing his freedom and being forced to do school. One day I was reading to the kids about the saints when I felt my hair suddenly being braided by many hands. I kept reading and let what I thought were many girls continue to braid. After the story, I turned around and was surprised to find that it was a group of boys braiding with this particular boy in the lead! I let them finish while laughing with the kids about it. After this, that little boy was my friend. He would often sit by me or quietly walk with me to lunch and breaks. At one point he even jumped in while I was struggling to drag a suitcase full of craft items and threw the suitcase over his shoulder to help me out. I told the bishop, who said that, sometimes, all these kids need is the touch from another person on THEIR terms to feel validated and respected. Letting this little boy braid my hair made him feel loved and gained me a new friend.
These impactful stories mentioned by Sandy are just a taste of the many incredible experiences that can take place on an OCMC team. There are so many opportunities to share Christ’s love throughout the world, and to in turn be changed by Orthodox Christians around the world, like Sandy and Ella were impacted by the people they met at the Children’s Home.
OCMC has several teams travelling to Kenya in 2017. Please prayerfully consider the upcoming opportunities, which you can find by going to ocmc.org or by calling OCMC at 1-877-463-6787 (ext. 142).

THEOPHANY / EPIPHANY 2017 CELEBRATION
Apart from the Resurrection of Christ or Easter, a feast whose date of celebration is mobile, and which is the "feast of the feasts" of the Liturgical Year, there are other 12 big feasts in the Liturgical Year: 9 of them have a fixed date of celebration, while 3 others have a mobile date of celebration.
Among the feasts which have a fixed date of celebration is the feast of Theophany or Epiphany of our LORD Jesus Christ, which is celebrated on 6th January every year. In the Year 2015, Theophany was celebrated on Tuesday, in Year 2016 on Wednesday, and in this Year 2017 We celebrate it on this Friday!
I can remember that, in the year 2015, in our Orthodox Diocese of Burundi, Rwanda and East Congo, We enjoyed celebration of Theophany in a Divine Liturgy presided by His Eminence Innocentios BYAKATONDA, the Bishop of the same Orthodox Diocese, in the Cathedral of the Holy Dormition of the Theotokos, in Bujumbura – BURUNDI; in year 2016, the Bishop presided the Liturgy of Divine Worship for Theophany in the Parish of Holy Trinity / Nyamata – RWANDA, and for this year 2017, His Eminence Innocentios BYAKATONDA is expected to preside the Service of Theophany in the Orthodox Parish of Rwamagana / RWANDA, the Parish where He has also celebrated the Service of New Year 2017, and where is his temporary residence and office in this part of Diocese for the moment.
With the fatherly blessing of His Eminence Innocentios BYAKATONDA, allow me to address to you the following information about the Feast of Theophany / Epiphany of our LORD Jesus Christ.
The Theophany (Epiphany) celebrates the Baptism of Our LORD Jesus Christ. By reading the Good News of Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew 3:13-17, We see that Jesus is publicly proclaimed the Son of God at His Baptism. In humility, God the Creator submits to baptism by the hand of John the Baptist. With glory the Trinity is revealed: God the Son is manifest in the flesh; the voice of God the Father proclaims: " This is My Beloved Son;" and God Holy Spirit descends upon Christ in the form of a dove. Feast Day readings are Matthew 3: 13-17; Titus 2: 11-14; 3:4-7. You can see also: Matthew 3:1-11; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; and Timothy3, 14-5,4.
In addition to the Divine Liturgy for celebation of Theophany / Epiphany of Our LORD Jesus Christ, the Bishop or the Priest who presides the liturgy makes the Service of Blessing of Holy Water.
This service can be organized on a river when there is one in the area, and if there is not, they simply make the Blessing of Water in an open wide container. This water is immediately used to bless people present during the service and to bless the homes, fields, animals...human business around. This Blessed Water can be drunk or used along the year for different blessing, as We believe that this blessed water is a healing water for different diseases, ailments, troubles, illness, sickness...of the soul, spirit, and body. Here is the reason the clergy and the laity around the Bishop or Priest presiding take a small quantity of this water in bottles for later use in the Church or at their homes. For the carried water is of a small quantity, the people will have to add it to other much water, and all the water becomes all blessed.
I am inviting my sisters, brothers and friends to join me celebrate this Theophany 2017, as I also celebrate my Second Anniversary of Appointment as a Reader of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Burundi, Rwanda and East Congo. I do have a lively memory of Theophany 2015 Celebration, an event which happened in the Cathedral of Holy Dormition of the Theotokos / Bujumbura, and I am happy to attach to this publication, some pictures of the day for you to enjoy the celebration.
Indeed, the Reader' Ministry is the 1st step towards the service to the Holy Altar which precedes the Ministry of Sub-Deacon in the Orthodox Church. In the Liturgical Service, the Reader generally collaborates with the chanters, and ever makes the readings of the epistles. In the catechetical activity, the Reader teaches people who prepare to receive the different sacraments and helps in their continual training. In the pastoral activity, especially in the starting Diocese, the Reader may represent a starting community, as I am doing in the Orthodox Communities of Mount Kigali & Mount Fumbwe / Nyagasambu.
I wish a Happy Celebration of the Feast of Theophany to all and to everyone!
