On Monday, the Day of the Holy Spirit, 9th June 2014, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, officiated at the Holy Church of the Ascension of the Lord, of the Russian Orthodox community in Tunis, together with Metropolitans Alexios of Carthage and Nikodimos of Memphis. During the Divine Liturgy, members of the Russian Community and the Greek Community were present, as well as the Ambassadors of Russia Mr. Alexandre CHEINE and of Greece Mrs. Anna Korka. At the end of the Divine Liturgy and the address given by Fr. Dimitri Netsvetaev, His Beatitude replied Theologically, speaking of the Feast of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit-filled journey of contemporary Christians, which with the events of the times is made far more difficult, particularly in the ares of North Africa, where Christians are in the minority.
He then went on to award Fr.Dimitri Netsvetaev the Commander of St Savvas the Sanctified, which is a distinction in recognition of his twenty-two year unstinting ecclesiastical ministry to the Russian speaking flock of Tunis, under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate and the local Metropolis, in the steps of his late father Fr. Dimitri Netsvetaev, who for many years served as exarch of the Patriarchate of Moscow in Cairo.
His Beatitude then had a significant meeting with the Tunisian Mufti in the Republic, and the Minister of Religious Affairs Mr. Mounir TELILI.With these two
religious and political figures, he discussed in a friendly atmosphere, emphasizing the contribution by the Patriarchate to the harmonious co-existence between Christianity and Islam on the African Continent and especially in the Arabic Islamic part of Magreb.
The Patriarchal visit to historic Carthage ended with a farewell lunch and gratitude on behalf of the Russian Orthodox community.

Orthodox Missionary Fraternity

orthodoxmission.org.gr

Dear President and Board Members of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity,
Christ is Risen!

Despite our financial difficulties, the struggle of the Mission continues on this beautiful and much-afflicted island of Madagascar. Day by day, our Church is growing, not only in human resources but also in terms of building facilities, that is Holy Churches, the orphanage in the capital city -which is also funded by a noble donor of your Fraternity-, a school at a university level, and all these, always in conjunction with our general charity action for the relief of the destitute, the sick, and all those in need of love and moral as well as material support.

Waiting for the delivery of water

We have repeatedly said that Mission is not only “the declaration of the Divine Word and people‘s Evangelism” but also an offer of charity and actual material relief and assistance.
The most important is that we confess all these to people regardless of their religious convictions, colour and racial or national characteristics. Our Faith is vibrant and pure like solid gold, and this is the way in which it should be offered, exactly as it  was handed down to us; “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst , give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.” (Rom.12, 20)
This is what the greatness and the differential power of Orthodoxy, that is why it is being embraced by more and more people in the Third Continent; the disinterested, selfless love. A love that does not expect a reward but only aims at the people’s illumination and salvation of soul, which are the “coals” of Faith, as mentioned by the Apostle of the Nations in the quotation above.

Therefore, we are very pleased to announce to you that the Missionary work, always in collaboration with our priests, is advancing, and we are now ready to begin the construction of a Holy Church at the city of Diego in the North. It is a city, where the first baptisms took place a few years ago, and at this time, there are a sufficient number of catechumens. This Holy Church should be intended to meet the needs of our Church in a region where the Orthodox Faith has just made its presence felt, particularly now that the first Orthodox Church is going to be erected. Its estimated cost is approximately €25,000.
We are aware of the financial difficulties Greece and other Orthodox countries are going through but we are also aware of the warm-heartedness and eagerness of the Orthodox people, who, despite the severe economic crisis that is plaguing their countries, still remain pioneers in philanthropy and missionary action. It is some poor countries today that evangelize a big continent which until yesterday was living in the darkness and in error under the delusion of idolatry, paganism and any heretical sect whatsoever. Besides, this is the mission which can bring us into prominence as pioneers of faith on the world stage.

We would like to thank once more, not only the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity, but also the generous donors who have contributed and still contribute to the continuation of the Missionary Work, which, after all, we always start together and hope to be able to complete by the Grace of God.

Bishop Ignatius of Madagascar

The Missionary Patriarchate of Alexandria

(Posted on Jul 30, 2012)

Patriarch TheodoreThe Thirteenth Apostle was in town earlier this week. The Judge of the Whole Universe. I am not kidding. His name is Theodoros II, and he is the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.
His full title is a bit of a going joke among the knowing: His Most Divine Beatitude the Pope and Patriarch of the Great City of Alexandria, Libya, Pentapolis, Ethiopia, all the land of Egypt, and all Africa, Father of Fathers, Shepherd of Shepherds, Prelate of Prelates, thirteenth of the Apostles, and Judge of the Œcumene (inhabited Greco-Roman Universe). A bit too much for the head of the ever dwindling Hellenic community of Egypt and neighboring countries, not to be confused with the Coptic Pope, who bears a similar title but leads Egypt’s much larger indigenous Christian community, which broke away from the Greek Orthodox Church in the 5th century over Christological and political differences.
The remarkable missionary outreach into the black, sub-Saharan Africa has turned the Patriarchate of Alexandria into one of the fastest growing and most actively evangelizing churches in the world.
That could well be just one of those anachronistic tributes to the Golden Age, whenever one can find it, that people in the Orthodox Church are so fond of – after all Alexandria was indeed the second most important city in the Roman Empire. If it wasn’t for the remarkable missionary outreach into sub-Saharan Africa that turned the Patriarchate of Alexandria into one of the fastest growing and most actively evangelizing churches in the world. And if the Western Christian mission in Africa has been vividly described, vastly romanticized on the one hand, and criticized as a part of the European colonialism on the other, the Eastern Christian mission, both by the Greeks and by the Copts, both taking place largely in the late colonial and post-colonial era and to a large extent based on indigenous quest by native Africans, remains tremendously underresearched and underreported.
Patriarch Theodoros was in Moscow to receive the prestigious award from the Patriarch of Moscow, Kirill, and the Foundation for the Unity of the Orthodox Peoples, which he shared with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas and the world’s number one tennis player – and apparently a church benefactor, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. He also presided over a glorious service last Sunday at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.
Russian Patriarch Kirill made clear that he honors his “senior brother” in the unruly family of Orthodox patriarchs not only for his missionary efforts, but also as a token of solidarity with Christians in Egypt and elsewhere, who are suffering attacks from radical Muslims. “We are praying today for the Christians of Africa, especially Northern Africa, where Christian blood is being spilled now, but not only for them,” said Patriarch Kirill addressing Patriarch Theodoros. “We know that in the countries of Central Africa, Christians are being killed, sometimes whole villages are being annihilated because the very fact of a Christian preaching appears to someone untimely, superfluous and even dangerous… After visiting Moscow, you will go on a missionary trip to 14 countries, including those where Christians are being killed. We will be praying for you.”
The pomposity of the hierarchical liturgy somehow makes it hard to imagine Patriarch Theodoros playing the drum in a Madagascar village or surrounded by ritual dancers in Cameroon. But in his acceptance speech in Moscow, he made it all clear: “When I leave this world, I would like to be remembered as a missionary Patriarch,” he said.
It was only in the 20th century, and particularly since the 1950s, that the mission to sub-Saharan Africa began in earnest. Both the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and the present Archbishop of Albania Anastasios spent time as missionaries in Kenya and Uganda – the countries with the largest Orthodox presence in sub-Saharan Africa. Another towering figure in this effort was Patriarch Petros VII (1996-2004) who increased the number of dioceses and spearheaded a major missionary campaign in areas previously untouched until his dramatic death, together with three bishops and his brother, in a helicopter crash en route to Mount Athos.
I remember interviewing Patriarch Petros in Zimbabwe’s capital of Harare in 1998. When asked about the pompous ancient title, he appeared to have some weary embarrassment, as if he is often asked about it. “It is a tribute to an old tradition, and we only use it rarely in a liturgical context,” he said.
The numbers of Orthodox Christians in Africa is a big unknown. It is known that there are presently 21 archdioceses and 4 dioceses in the Church. Only two out of 27 active bishops are black. But the majority of clergy are native and locally trained in African seminaries. The total number of Orthodox Christians in Africa is estimated to have grown in the past 20 years from 200,000 to 1.5 million. Some sources speak of several million members, but it is impossible to verify any figures. What is important is that the growth is out there.
What is also remarkable is how this church combines in its worship the Greek, Russian and local cultural forms such as instruments and dance unheard of, if not to say an anathema in more traditional Orthodox cultures. The video of an Easter celebration in Ghana went viral last year among the world’s Orthodox Christians precisely for that reason. In a sign of a growing interest in Russia, a popular Russian Orthodox magazine Foma (Thomas) published a report about the life of a parish in Kenya which generated a large response from readers.
“In my view, this is probably the most interesting phenomenon within the ‘Orthodox world’ in the twenty-first century, and one that is very little known and even less understood,” Irina Papkova, the associate professor of political science at Central European University in Budapest said in an email interview. Papkova is also launching a research project on African Orthodox Christianity. “I think that it is important because of the ways in which Africans are adopting Orthodoxy. They are accepting the content of Orthodoxy, but they are transforming the form, which shows to us really that common images of Orthodoxy as a completely rigid religion are not accurate. There is plenty of space within the faith for creative transformation, at least as far as the form of outward worship is concerned. This is really important for us to remember, as Orthodox populations in Europe and Russia in particular are struggling with the question of how Orthodoxy fits with (post)modernity and whether it is heretical or not to adapt certain non-dogmatic aspects of worship (such as language) to contemporary cultural conditions.”
When one sees what is happening in Africa, it is impossible not to be inspired by the absolute purity of faith with which the people of Ghana, Kenya, etc. are accepting Orthodox Christianity. From the joy that one sees in their liturgical celebrations, you get the sense that the Africans are experiencing communion with Christ immediately, here and now.

Tracing the roots of the Orthodox Church in Uganda

In the dusty neighbourhoods of Namungoona on the outskirts of Kampala, stands St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral. The 57-year-old house of worship is the Metropolia (main church) of the Orthodox faith in Uganda. This sanctuary which also accommodates a hospital and a school has transformed the hilly village drawing admiration from residents.
The 2002 Uganda National Bureau of Statistics report lists Orthodox Christians as a mainstream religious group. The sect commands one per cent following of the 24 million population interviewed at the time.
Theodore Kato, the church’s secretary general estimates the faithful to be 1.4 million. He also says the church has common traits with other Christian sects like the belief that God revealed himself through Jesus Christ, the incarnation of Christ, his crucifixion and resurrection-only differing in lifestyle, worship and aspects of spirituality like God and man, confessions, transcendence of God, Holy spirit and trinity.
The word “Orthodox” is derived from the Greek words orthos (right) and doxa (belief). Hence orthodox literally means correct belief or right thinking.
A summary of history from the BBC has it that after the ascension of Jesus Christ, another splinter group with roots in the Roman Empire emerged from the church giving birth to the Orthodox Church. However, internal rumblings within this sect forced it to split into two-the Orthodox Catholic Church and Orthodox Christian Church. These splinter groups, however, remain united in faith and by a common approach to worship, theology and tradition.
In Uganda, the faith is marking 81 years of existence and its foundation is commemoratively attributed to the relentless efforts of Bishop Christophorous Reuben Spartas Mukasa Ssebanja, a former Anglican faithful.

The man behind faith in Uganda
Spartas was born Reuben Sebbanja to Anglican parents in 1899, in Mulawa village, present day Luweero District. By virtue of this affiliation, he was baptised in the Anglican Church and at the age of eight, he was enrolled in an Anglican school at Nakanyonyi in Mukono District. He later received a scholarship to attend Kings College Budo, an-all-Anglican school at the time.
While at Budo, he volunteered to serve at the library of the Anglican Theological College. During this time, he considered ordination into the Church. He gave up this ambition after discovering that the Church was actually a splinter from the Catholic Church and a branch of the “True Church”.
“This left a stir into his mind of what the True Church was,” Bishop Macharios, a Kenyan Orthodox clergy, wrote in his 2010 memoirs of the Orthodoxy.
In the 1920s, he joined the Kings African Rifles, where he trained as a clerk and was dispatched to Bombo. He adopted the name Sparta after being intrigued by the actions of the Greek Spartans whom he read about widely during his early education, but later envisaged it would help him make contact with the Greeks.
The 1966 African Orthodox Journal states; “During his education, Spartas read an article in one of the English books titled Orthodoxy, which explained the teaching of the faith and in which he found out that there is a “True Church” –the Orthodox Church. This marked the beginning of everything.”
Bishop Macharios notes: “It was indeed a sad commentary on Orthodox missionary endeavour in the 20th century that Africans had difficulty in becoming affiliated canonically. Searching for every prospect in Uganda and Kenya, it seemed a long hard journey he had set, not until he (Spartas) came across the Negro World, a book published by Marcus Garvey.”
The Birth of the Orthodox Church in Uganda
Spartas read extensively about the Garvey movement and the African Orthodox Church in America. In 1925, he wrote to Archbishop Alexander McGuire, who headed the Orthodox Church in America asking for instructions on how to read and preach from the bible.

In 1928, he was appointed Group Scoutmaster for Bulemezi Sub-county, an office he utilised to spread African Orthodox ideas in Buganda. That very year, he got his response from the Archbishop.

With renewed zeal, Spartus sought audience with the Katikiro of Buganda, Martin Luther Nsibirwa to explain his “True Church” ideology.

On January, 6, 1932, after a service at an Anglican Church in Degeya, a village in present day Luweero District , Spartas announced that he was breaking away from the Anglican Church to form the Orthodox Catholic Church. He stated that the church was “for all right thinking African men who wished to be free in their own house and not always being thought of as boys”.

This assertion brought fierce criticism and heated arguments, but this did not deter him. Shortly after this pronouncement, he wrote to the British Colonial Provincial Commissioner, informing him that the African Orthodox Church in Uganda did not intend to interfere with any political affairs. He also requested for permission to spread the doctrine. When permission was granted, Spartas along with his friends, Obadia Bassaja Kitalo, Irenaeus Magimbi and Theodoros Nankyama, set out to launch the church.

According to the church archives, the first Orthodox Church was a modest grass-thatched structure in Degeya which also housed a junior training school for young men. Young but zealous for the new faith, Spartas wrote to the Church leadership in Greece, requesting Archimandrite Nicodemus Sarikas, to visit Uganda. He honoured their request and visited the budding church in 1933.
The African Orthodox Journal says this visit was instrumental because Sarikas mapped the way for the church’s growth including teaching the new converts the seven sacraments and working of the Liturgy. The church then took on the name of Eastern Orthodox African Church of Uganda and East Africa.”

Turning point
Bishop Macharios says of the visit: “this visit was a turning point in Spartus’ life. On October 5, 1933, he left Degeya on foot for Namungoona to start a covent -St Sophia”.

The land there had been given to him by King Daudi Chwa to enhance his evangelistic works. He went on to set up Chwa II Grammar School as the educational headquarters of the Churchalong with a covent and a primary school. The covent was funded by His Beatitude Meletios, the Pope and Patriarch of the Church in Alexandria (Egypt) who largely donated books, which Spartas was tasked to translate to Luganda. And in 1935, the first Luganda book was published.

In 1937, The Orthodox Church in Uganda was fully recognised by the Orthodox Church Council. And by the end of 1938, the Church had claimed close to 5,000 followers in the central region with substantial expansive plans to other regions drawn.

Spartas embarked on a series of trips to several Orthodox leaning countries seeking additional support for the Church in Uganda. His efforts were not in vain, because according to the Orthodox journal, in the 1940s, Spartas was ordained as the Patriarch Vicar General of the African Orthodox Church.

In the 1950s, the church was registered in accordance with the Incorporation Act of 1953. Kato says this paved way for a new modern Church structure to be constructed in 1956-57. The new structure was renamed St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral and was consecrated in 1959 by Archbishop Metropolitan Nicholaus.
Bishop Spartas passed on in 1989 at the age of 90 and was laid to rest adjacent to the Cathedral. He was succeeded by Archbishop Theodoros Nankyama who died in 1995. Archbishop Jonah Lwanga took on the mantle and is still the reigning head.

Countrywide, the church has 90 communities overseen by 27 priests.
Kato, the church’s secretary general, adds that the church is facing a number of challenges like declining numbers of believers, shortage of church headsmen, and financial setbacks.

philenews.com

Τι ήταν όμως εκείνο που οδήγησε τους Βρετανούς αποικιστές από τη μια μέρα στην άλλη να υποβαθμίσουν μια από τις πλέον σημαντικές τους αποικίες, που μαζί με την Ινδία είχαν ονομαστεί τα «Διαμάντια της Αυτοκρατορίας υποβιβάζοντάς την σε μια από τις πλέον μισητές γι’ αυτούς αποικίες, όπου δόθηκε, όπως πολλοί υποστηρίζουν σήμερα, η τελευταία αντιαποικιακή μάχη του Ψυχρού Πολέμου;

Archbishopric of Good Hope

Durban Sunday of Penticost and feast of Holy Trinity 2014 8 Jun aa

On Saturday 7 June 2014, His Eminence Archbishop Sergios travelled to Durban and he managed to attend Liturgy for the Saturday of Souls at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Durban, officiated by Fr. Constantinos Kosmidis.
The service was very well attended with more than thirty prepared dishes of Kolyva. After the service, Father Constantinos welcomed His Eminence and invited him to address the congregation. His Eminence responded by thanking Father Constantinos who has recently been appointed as parish priest for KwaZulu-Natal.
His Eminence also expressed his gratitude to the congregation for conserving the Holy Tradition of the Church by remembering their forefathers who had passed away. He said it is important to remember the benefactors of our churches, parents, teachers and forefathers, and to respect their contribution to our Orthodox communities in Africa. They have secured a future for us and we have a responsibility to pass on our Holy Tradition to future generations.

Archbishopric of Good Hope

Durban Sunday of Penticost and feast of Holy Trinity 2014 8 Jun a (1)

On Sunday, 10 June 2014, His Eminence Archbishop Sergios officiated at the Divine Liturgy of Pentecost to mark the patronal feast of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Durban. The Liturgy was served together with Fr. Constantinos Kosmidis and Fr. George Yiannakopoulos from Johannesburg and was followed by an Artoklasia. After this, the Kneeling Vespers of Pentecost was served.
In his address after the service, His Eminence said that at Pentecost we celebrate the creation of the One Church by the Holy Spirit who was sent by God The Father. Christ is the Head of the Church and human beings make up His Body. The unity that exists between the Divine Persons of the Holy Trinity provides a model for the unity of the Church. The human race was created by God as one and each unique person also receives living energy from the Holy Trinity and all that is necessary for their life.

Teaching at the Orthodox Theological School of the Congo

Saint Athanasius the Athonite Theological School, a faculty of the Orthodox University of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, started operating at the Mont Ngafula region in Kinshasa in September 2007. Attendance at school is five years. The School offers three directions:
  1. The Bible-Patristic Theology-Ecclesiastical History,
  2. Liturgics and
  3. Organization and Administration of Church Life.
The number of students during the first academic year of the School (2007-2008) amounted to 70, and has remained broadly stable until today. On average, there are 15 students per class. Attendance is compulsory. The presentations delivered for each lesson last two hours each, which is strictly observed. The teaching staff comes from DRC, Greece, France and Australia. Teaching is held either in person or by teleconference.

Campus

Plaque of gratitude

The school is situated up on a green hill, about 25km outside the capital. When approaching it, the first thing one can see from afar is the imposing dome of the Church of St Athanasius the Athonite, which dominates the center of the internal yard of the Institution.
Monastic architecture was undoubtedly the source of inspiration for the creator of the wide building complex. An imposing protective enclosure surrounds the particular premises of the school, which are circumferentially arranged around the temple. It is thanks to generous donations that all the necessary premises of an educational institution have been created, which are organized in such a way as to provide accommodation not only to the boarders and the teaching staff but also to all those who come to the School in order to offer missionary ministry as well as love and knowledge. The contribution of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity to that field was great once more.

How I became professor of the Theological School

I had the pleasure of being informed about this ambitious effort of the Mission in the heart of Africa by my colleague Niki Papageorgiou, who has taken an active part in it as a professor since the very first academic year. I must confess that I was really impressed and thought that I could contribute to something myself. So when Mrs. Papageorgiou conveyed to me the request of His Eminence Metropolitan Nikiforos of Central Africa to undertake teaching the course of Byzantine art, which I teach at the Theological School of Aristotle University, I had no qualms whatsoever. In fact, I wanted to go to Kinshasa in order to teach there in person, because I believe in the power of personal contact with students.
I have now joined the academic staff of the School since the academic year 2012-2013. The first courses (30 hours of teaching) were held for the first year students in January 2013. There was so much interest that the barrage of questions during the course resulted in my not managing to cover the material. For this reason, the next year (2013-2014), the course was also added to the second year curriculum. I’ll never forget the way the second-year students welcomed me in February 2014. It was impossible not to cry.
Apart from the courses, the daily schedule did not differ from the coenobitic monastic life: Matins, breakfast, teaching session, lunch, teaching session, evening prayer, dinner and Compline. After the Compline service and until the interruption in the power supply at about 10 pm, we would try to find a few hours to rest in the beautiful garden of the School. Most often, however, this was impossible, because we were approached by youths who needed to find answers to their queries, not only on purely theological issues. The discussions were fruitful for both sides.

Professors and students' companionship

Challenges we face

Therefore, the project which is performed in this academic institution is titanic. The problems are plentiful, the major being lack of financial resources in order to ensure free schooling for the students, supply of computers, printers, scanners, stationery and also books to enrich the library.
Students are required to prepare projects during their studies. However, the question is where to search for their material, if there are no suitable conditions. Here we have to note that the level of school infrastructure is tightly controlled by the official state.
We believe that with the help of St Athanasius the Athonite, St. Barbara, whose temple was opened in the school courtyard this year, and all those who believe in the necessity of disseminating genuine Theology to the ends of the earth, any problems will be eliminated and the project will grow enormously.

St. Athanasios the Athonite

Today’s students as clergy or laity will take over and will minister to their local church and their own seminary. Every Sunday the brilliant ‘Catholicon’ of the school filled with poor, shabbily dressed children of the neighbourhood, who came perhaps to get the antidoron and a few candies, but attended the Divine Liturgy with great reverence. I want to believe that those children are the future students of Theology.
I praise and thank God for giving me the opportunity to meet another world, and I hope he grants that I will be able to go there every year in order to teach and be taught and also in order to remember that some people in the world who are struggling for the obvious, might be entering the kingdom of God before us.
Maria Kazamia
Associate Professor – Faculty of Theology AUTH,
Regular member of the Fraternity

The Theological School of the Congo constitutes an ambitious project, aiming to bring out young and trained members of the Church, who will plough the aching soils of the African land, to preach the Risen Christ.
The students of Theology come from various regions of the vast country and don’t pay tuition, while they are provided with free accomodation and feeding. Operating such a school imply multiple financial difficulties and keeps on due to successive miracles of God’s love.
You can also be a part of this miracle. Support the Theological School of the Congo.

savvaspokkias

«Father Chrysostomos performs a service before a completely empty church in Tripoli, Libya. Following three years of instability and targeted killings by armed, fundamentalist groups, many Christians have fled Libya»...
